The Canadian city has been elected at the
General Assembly of IOPD as new president of the organization and therefore
will host the 17th Conference of the International Observatory on
Participatory Democracy to be held in the summer of 2017. With a population of 1,700,000
inhabitants (4,000,000 metropolitan area) is the most populous city in Quebec
and second in Canada. It is a city that is committed to the participation of
its citizens in municipal politics, as a sign that since 2002 has an
independent Office for participatory processes, the OCPM. Montreal celebrates
in 2017 the 375 anniversary of its founding and for this reason wanted to take
on the challenge of organizing an IOPD Conference.
The mayor of Montreal, Denis Coderre therefore
assumes the presidency of the IOPD and political leadership of the organization
of participatory democracy.
