The Autonomous City of Buenos Aires presented an outstanding implementation of a political innovation exercise called from the perspective of participatory democracy: "Jugar y participar" (Playing and Participating), an experience to include children's perspectives in urban planning, and specifically in public squares and playgrounds. The aim of this project is to enable inclusion, empowerment and widespread citizen participation among the youngest population through different dynamics.
One of the aims of the experiment is to improve the quality of public decision making through participatory democracy mechanisms. The jury highlighted the innovative nature of the project and appreciated the mechanisms of participation which place children at the centre and allows for simple transferability to other municipalities.
In addition, a special mention was granted by the jury to five other experiences:
Rural Participatory Budgeting, Cuenca (climate change mention)
Gender Mainstreaming Strategy for Citizen Participation, Catalonia (gender mention)
Esplugues Participates: Guaranteeing Inclusiveness, Esplugues de Llobregat (mention)
Citizen Guardians, Chihuahua (mention)
Humanizing the Budget Process, Durham (mention)

The results were announced in the frame of the special virtual event "Participatory Democracy and new governance", co-organized by the Municipality of Córdoba (Argentina), the City of Madrid, the City of Barcelona, the Office de Consultation Publique de Montréal and the International Observatory on Participatory Democracy.
The aim of this meeting was to share and exchange successful experiences of Citizen Participation in the metropolises, within the framework of the Pilot Project of Participatory Democracy carried out by the City of Córdoba, in synergy with the World Metropolitan Day and the Habitat Day (Metropolis and UN-Habitat).
